To distinguish between wood and metal drill bits, you have to consider how big their diameters are. The smaller the diameter, the more likely they will damage wood. However, wood drill bits can be used on metal. In order to tell the difference, you can use a drill bit gauge.

Differences

While metal drill bits are better suited to drilling metal and concrete, wood drill bits are best for drilling softer materials. They are used in a variety of construction and woodworking projects. Read on to learn more about the differences between metal and wood drill bits and which one you should use for a given job.

Wood drill bits typically have a pointed or brad-pointed tip for easier drilling. They are usually black or silver in color and may have a gold or copper finish. Different materials require different types of drill bits, so knowing the differences between metal and wood drill bits can make selecting the right tools easier.

TiN coating

The TiN coating is a ceramic coating that is applied to drill bits made from High-Speed Steel (HSS). The coating increases the surface hardness and provides a thermal barrier while reducing friction. This improved surface hardness helps drill bits drill more efficiently and last longer. The coating also prevents corrosion and can increase production rates. This coating is suitable for drilling metals, including steel, iron, aluminum, magnesium, and wood.

Hardness

Drill bits are available in a variety of hardness levels. They are hard enough to cut through most materials, but they can also be brittle. The hardness of the drill bit should match the hardness of the material that is being drilled. Otherwise, the drill bit will break easily.

Hard metals require special drill bits with higher hardness. They are best suited for drilling hardened alloys, but aren’t as efficient in drilling softer materials. Softer metals can lead to the clogging of the hole, which places excessive angular stress on the drill bit.

Cost

When choosing a wood drill bit, there are several things to consider. One of the most important factors is safety. If you’re drilling holes in joists or large beams made of dry timber, the wrong tool could cause serious injury. Using the right drill bit will minimize or eliminate these risks.

Metal drill bits and wood drill bits look very similar, but the two have different characteristics. For one, metal drill bits can overheat due to intense friction. They are often coated with cobalt, titanium, or black oxide to prevent overheating. They are also colored black, dark gray, copper, or silver.

Common type

Drill bits come in many shapes and sizes. They are often used for attaching sheet metal. A typical riveting job involves drilling a hole, inserting a screw, and tightening the screw against another piece of metal. However, some drill bits are made for certain jobs and not for others.

One type of drill bit is called a “swing-bit.” It’s designed to drill holes that are less than five times the bit’s diameter. Unlike conventional drill bits, it cuts faster and bears high axial loads. However, it is not recommended for drilling holes deeper than five times its diameter.
