Breathing difficulties during sleep are known as orthopnea and are often caused by a number of different factors, including a health condition, anxiety disorder, or lifestyle habits. The condition may be life threatening and is best diagnosed by a physician to determine the most appropriate treatment. It can also be a symptom of other serious health conditions, such as heart failure.

Breathing difficulty while lying down is one of the most common symptoms of a heart condition called congestive heart failure. This disorder results in a weakened heart, which means that it is unable to pump blood as effectively as it should. Because of this, other parts of the body suffer. Breathing difficulties can also result from allergies or asthma.

Another common cause of sitting up in sleep is pneumonia. This infection can be bacterial, viral, or fungal. As it can be life-threatening, pneumonia should be treated as soon as possible. If your breathing problems become severe, you should call for emergency medical help immediately. In addition, breathing difficulties can be a symptom of ascites, a buildup of fluid in the body. This fluid puts pressure on the organs in the abdomen, causing breathing difficulties.

If you find that you’re constantly sitting up in your sleep, you might have a sleeping disorder called obstructive sleep apnea. This disorder causes the soft tissue in the back of the throat to collapse. As a result, the airway becomes narrow and the patient stops breathing for up to 10 seconds. When this occurs, the brain wakes up briefly and attempts to open the airway again.
