CeCe McDonald
“Free CeCe!” is a documentary about a trans woman serving a 19-month prison sentence. The documentary was produced by Laverne Cox and directed by Jac Gares. It details CeCe McDonald’s story, highlighting the community activism she experienced during her ordeal. In addition to her family, friends, and co-workers, CeCe McDonald was able to gain the support of many prominent figures in the media.
CeCe McDonald is a transgender woman and an icon of the LGBTQ community. Her tragic story sparked an international campaign to free her. In June 2011, McDonald was attacked while walking with friends in Minneapolis. The attackers were white and made racist and transphobic remarks about her, which led to her being stabbed in the face. McDonald served 19 months in prison for her actions, which were considered “self-defense” and not murder.
“FREE CeCe!” was originally a segment of a history program called “In the Life.” It was meant to shed light on the violence transgender women of color experience every day. However, the show was canceled after it was completed, leaving McDonald with no other choice but to share her story. After her release, McDonald has been tirelessly promoting public education and speaking out about her experience. She has appeared on VICE, Melissa Harris-Perry, and Huffington Post Live and has worked with various organizations and individuals to promote her message.
