There are several ways to advance your career as an investment banker. You can earn a master’s degree, complete an internship, or enroll in a Series 79 or 7 licensing program. You can also obtain a CIBA designation. Below is a brief overview of the steps you should take to achieve these goals.
Series 79 and 7 licensing programs
In order to work as an investment banker, you will need to take the Securities Industry Essentials (SIE) exam and pass the Series 79 exam. These exams are not taken together but are required for registration with FINRA. The SIE exam focuses on the basic skills that you will need to be successful in the financial world. It will also test your knowledge of the different securities markets.
The Series 79 exam is administered by computer and contains 75 multiple-choice questions. It lasts two hours and 30 minutes and requires a score of 73 to pass. Questions on the exam cover investment banking products, regulation, and types of offerings. The exam will also test your ability to apply analytical reasoning and mathematical concepts.
The Series 79 licensing program is intended for individuals who are not currently registered as a broker-dealer. The program is not required for individuals who only conduct securities sales. But it may be necessary for those who advise companies on financing or business combinations.
