Elizabeth Bishop is a writer whose early life was marked by a succession of tragedies. Her father died when she was eight months old, and her mother was institutionalized after bouts of insanity. The rest of her childhood was spent living in different homes with relatives.
Elizabeth Bishop began writing poetry at age eight. She received a degree from Vassar College in 1934.
After her graduation, Bishop took a job at Harvard. She taught at the University for seven years. At first, she wrote poems for an anthology. Later, she founded her own literary journal, Con Spirito.
While at Harvard, she met Robert Lowell. They became good friends. Their friendship helped Bishop publish her first collection of poems, Trial Balances.
Career
A renowned poet, Elizabeth Bishop won the Pulitzer Prize, the National Book Award and the Academy of American Poets Fellowship. Her poetry is marked by formal variety and a sophisticated style. She was also a prolific letter writer, sending more than 500 letters to poets.
Bishop was born in Worcester, Mass. in 1911, and her father died when she was eight months old. The rest of her childhood was spent shuffled between relatives. When she was five, her mother was committed to a mental hospital. She went on to attend Vassar College, where she studied music. It was there that she met Marianne Moore. Moore became a close friend and mentor.
Moore introduced Bishop to poetry. She also helped publish Bishop’s work. One of their poems, “North Haven,” pays tribute to Robert Lowell after his death.
