If you’re wondering what kind of clover is best for lawns, you’re not alone. Many homeowners wonder the same thing, and there’s good news: there are a number of different types. There are four-leaf varieties, as well as a variety that attracts pollinators and resists blight.

Good luck finding a four-leaf clover

A four-leaf clover is a genetically modified plant that grows a fourth leaf. Researchers at the University of Georgia discovered the gene that allows clover plants to sprout a fourth leaf under certain conditions. This gene can be inherited, and plants that are close together are more likely to have a common gene. This means that finding one four-leaf clover in your lawn will almost guarantee that you’ll find one in the future.

Although it’s not a grass, clover is a great addition to any lawn because of its ability to fix nitrogen. The plant fixes nitrogen through transpiration, turning atmospheric nitrogen into usable soil nitrogen. This is especially beneficial for lawns that lack adequate nitrogen. It adds natural nitrogen to the soil, which means you won’t need to fertilize as often. Another plus to clover is that it is drought-resistant and stays green in hot weather.

Self-fertilizing

Clover seed can be applied to lawns in the spring or late summer. Seeding in the spring promotes vigorous growth and winter endurance. However, seeding in the late summer or early fall is not as beneficial for lawns. After fertilizing the lawn in the spring, the next step is to water the soil thoroughly.

Clover grows best in sandy loam or clay soil. The soil pH should be around six to seven. A soil test kit or a pH meter can help you find this level. If the soil is too acidic, you can add lime or peat moss to make the soil more balanced.

Attracts pollinators

Planting pollinating plants in lawns not only adds to the appearance of your lawn, but also helps pollinators, such as bees, survive. The best plants to use for pollination are those that are native to your region. Native plants can be found in your local extension offices. However, not all plantings need to be native. You can also include a variety of species that are suitable for your climate.

Hummingbirds nest in the trees and vines in your lawn, while butterflies prefer damp areas for feeding. Both hummingbirds and butterflies are attracted to red flowers. Hummingbirds are particularly attracted to scarlet flowers. You can create a hummingbird-friendly area in your lawn by planting nectar-rich flowers and providing a puddling station for them. To make it easier for the pollinators to come to your lawn, you can also use a tiller to loosen up the top three inches of soil.

Resists blight

The words “resistant” have a variety of meanings in the plant world. It can mean that a variety is completely resistant to disease or that it is more resistant than previous varieties. The degree of resistance will vary with each variety, but usually the increase is significant over previous varieties.

Fungicides can be a useful preventive measure, but they can also lead to a full-blown lawn repair if not controlled. Fungicides have several modes of action, including systemic and protective. It is important to use the product as directed to ensure the effectiveness.

Resists bee stings

To resist bee stings, you should learn to avoid areas that bees frequent. This means avoiding woodpiles, trash cans, attics, decks, and roof overhangs. It is also important to avoid sudden movements. Bees can fly up to 18 miles per hour and you cannot outrun them. Besides, guard bees will make a loud buzzing noise to frighten you away.

You can also apply a paste made of baking soda and water. This paste will reduce the inflammation and pain associated with the sting. Another solution that may help is apple cider vinegar. This substance neutralizes bee venom. Apply this mixture to the affected area and allow it to sit for about 20 minutes.
